Most Character AI vs Chai comparisons repeat the same short version. Character.AI is the polished, filtered one. Chai is the scrappy, unfiltered one that lets you do what Character.AI won't. That summary was roughly fair in 2023. By September 2026 both apps have changed enough that half of it is wrong, and the half that's wrong is the half people use to decide.
Below are six things people commonly believe about the two apps, checked against their own terms, safety pages and store listings. Each myth ends with what's true now, so you can make the call on current facts.
Myth 1: Chai is the unfiltered version of Character.AI
This is the belief that sends most people to Chai, and it's the one that has moved furthest from reality.
Chai's safety center says its models and real-time safety systems are designed to refuse restricted material, "including sexually explicit content". It says every user message is scanned in real time for self-harm content, and that users who express self-harm intent get a notification pointing them to crisis services. Users can also turn on filters that hide explicit messages, block specific characters and remove mature content from search.
The picture isn't fully consistent. Chai's end user license agreement, updated in July 2026, allows adult content if it's "strictly fictional" and outside the prohibited categories. So one official page says the model refuses sexually explicit material and another leaves room for adult fiction. What users see in practice probably sits somewhere between the two.
Character.AI's written rules are simpler. Its community guidelines prohibit pornography and nudity, and allow romance and violent storytelling within limits.
What's true now: Chai is not the no-rules app its reputation suggests. Both have filters. Chai's are newer, a little less consistent on paper, and partly under your control.
Myth 2: Chai is free and unlimited
Chai's free tier used to be one of its selling points. In April 2026 Chai tightened the rate limits for free users and told them in an email that the reason was the cost of GPU power. According to reporting on that email, the company also admitted the in-app "Unlimited" label was wrong for free users, since unlimited texting is only available to subscribers.
The paid plans on the US App Store look like this:
- Premium: $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year.
- Ultra: $29.99 a month, or $19.99 a week.
- Packs of "Pieces", Chai's in-app currency, at $2.79 for 200 and $6.99 for 500.
The store also lists a "Premium Membership" item at $9.99 without saying what period it covers. Chai doesn't publish an official list of what each tier adds, so reviews are the main source there.
Character.AI's free tier works the other way around. Messaging is unlimited, and the cost shows up as ads, a slow mode at busy times and limits on extras. Ads for free users were announced in August 2025, and in 2026 free users also got daily caps on some extras like swipes. The paid plans are (c.ai) lite, from $4.99 a month in the US, and c.ai+, at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. Lite removes banner ads, cuts full-screen ads and doubles pinned memories from 15 to 30. c.ai+ removes ads and slow mode entirely.
What's true now: Character.AI is the one with unlimited free messages, and it's also the cheaper one to upgrade. Chai's monthly Premium costs $4 more than c.ai+, and its top plan costs three times as much.
Myth 3: You can use either one in a browser
Character.AI runs in a browser at character.ai, as well as on iOS and Android.
Chai doesn't have a web version. Its official site still says the web app is "coming soon". Several sites with "chai" in the domain offer something that looks like browser access, but they aren't run by Chai Research, the company behind the app. If you want Chai, the real options are the iOS and Android apps.
This matters more than it sounds. If you chat on a work laptop, a shared computer or a school device where you can't install apps, only one of these two is available to you.
What's true now: Character.AI works in a browser. Chai is phone-only, and browser versions that claim to be Chai come from someone else.
Myth 4: Character.AI is for teenagers and Chai is for adults
For years that was roughly how people split them. It's out of date.
Character.AI ended open-ended chat for users under 18 in late November 2025. Teen accounts now get a reading mode with stories and similar formats, but no back-and-forth chat. To enforce that, Character.AI uses an in-house model that estimates age from account and activity signals, and if it flags you, you can verify with a selfie through a vendor called Persona. According to Character.AI's FAQ, an ID is only requested if the selfie check is inconclusive. In practice, Character.AI's chat is now an adults-only service with active checks.
Chai says it's an 18+ service and is rated 18+ on the App Store. Google Play rates it Mature 17+. We found no description of Chai running its own selfie or ID checks. Its license asks users to confirm their age, and its safety page leans on app stores to verify age where they do.
Both companies have a safety history that led to these rules. In 2023 a Belgian man died by suicide after weeks of conversation with a Chai bot, and Chai said afterwards that it had added a crisis message. In January 2026 Character.AI and Google agreed to settle several lawsuits brought by families of teenagers. Both platforms now scan for self-harm and point users to help.
What's true now: both are for adults. Character.AI checks actively. Chai mostly relies on your word and on the app store.
Myth 5: Chai disappeared for good
Search for Chai in 2026 and you'll see a lot of posts asking where the iPhone app went. Users widely reported it missing from the US App Store for a stretch in mid-2026. In July 2026 Chai said a new version was going through Apple's review, built around a new safety system its CEO described as the safest version the company had released.
As of late September 2026 the app is back on the US App Store, rated 4.3 from about 282,000 ratings, with an update released days before this article was written. On Google Play it has 3.3 stars from about 835,000 reviews and more than 10 million downloads.
For comparison, Character.AI sits at 4.3 from about 558,000 ratings on the App Store and 2.2 from about 2.44 million reviews on Google Play. Character.AI's low Google Play score is the most striking number in the whole comparison, and it's hard to read without the past year of age checks, ads and teen restrictions in mind.
What's true now: Chai is available on both app stores. The iPhone outage is a reason to keep a backup, not a reason to assume it's gone.
Myth 6: Chai is a small side project running on someone else's AI
Chai started in 2020 with William Beauchamp and his sister in Cambridge, England, and later moved to Palo Alto. The team is still small, around 15 people according to a July 2026 press release. That's where the "side project" idea comes from.
The rest of the picture is different. Chai trains its own language models, and its site says the largest ones it runs are 235-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts models. It says it operates about 5,000 GPUs and had over a million daily active users as of March 2025. Its revenue claims vary by source: its own site says $70 million a year in 2026, and the July press release says over $100 million in annual recurring revenue. Either way, this is a real business, not a hobby.
Character.AI is bigger and more visible, with more legal and press attention. In September 2026 it announced that its CEO, Karandeep Anand, is leaving to become Disney's chief technology officer, and it has been adding formats such as comics and series alongside chat.
What's true now: both are serious companies with their own technology. The difference is mostly team size and how much scrutiny each one attracts.
What's left once the myths are gone
Take away the outdated beliefs and the choice gets simpler.
Character.AI has the stronger memory tools. You can pin memories, see automatic memories, and use Lorebooks for world details, with an advanced version for c.ai+ subscribers. It runs on the web, has voice calls and a cheaper paid tier. Its downsides are the age checks, the ads on the free tier and the daily limits on extras.
Chai is a fast, phone-first app with a big library of user-made bots. Chai doesn't publish much about how memory works, and reviews tend to describe it as the weaker of the two. Its downsides are the tighter free tier since April 2026, higher prices, and a filter policy that reads differently depending on which page you open.
Pick Character.AI if you can pass the age check, write long stories and want to fix the free tier cheaply. Pick Chai if you mostly chat on your phone in short bursts, don't want to verify with a selfie, and are willing to pay more for fewer limits.
