Most Character AI vs PolyBuzz comparisons line the two up feature by feature. Both have huge character libraries. Both let you build your own bots. Both do voice, both do images, both run on your phone and in a browser. Read three of those comparisons and you still won't know which one to open tonight.
Here's the obvious thing nobody puts at the top. The features overlap almost completely. What doesn't overlap is the deal each app offers you: what you get for free, what you pay for, and what you have to prove about yourself before you're allowed to chat at all. That's where the two platforms split, and it's what decides which one you'll still be using in a month.
What each platform is, in two paragraphs
Character.AI is run by Character Technologies, founded in 2021 by two former Google researchers. It launched publicly in September 2022 and became the default name in the category. Its library is mostly community-made characters, and its app ratings tell a split story: 4.3 stars from about 558,000 ratings on the US App Store, 2.2 from about 2.4 million reviews on Google Play, as of September 2026.
PolyBuzz started life in 2023 as an app called Poly.AI and rebranded to PolyBuzz in January 2025. The company behind it, per its terms of use, is Cloud Whale Interactive Technology, registered in Delaware. It says it hosts over 20 million characters. Its ratings are steadier: 4.4 from about 477,000 ratings on the App Store and 4.0 from about 1.18 million reviews on Google Play.
The free tier: two different bargains
Both apps are free to start, and both make you pay for that with ads. The shape of the free experience is different, though.
On Character.AI, free means unlimited messaging with strings attached. You get ads, a slow mode during busy periods, 15 pinned memories and capped access to the better chat styles. Ads for free users arrived in August 2025, which is part of why long-time users describe the free tier as noticeably worse than it used to be.
On PolyBuzz, free chat is described as free and unlimited too, also supported by ads. The catch sits somewhere else. Voice listening, regenerating a reply, extended voice chats and certain memory features run on in-app currencies, Coins and Opals. So the free tier feels generous until you try to do anything beyond reading and typing, and then it starts asking for coins.
If you mostly type and read, both free tiers work. If you like to regenerate replies until one lands, or you listen to voices, PolyBuzz's free tier runs out faster.
The paid tiers: one cheap step, or a ladder
Character.AI has two paid plans. The (c.ai) lite plan costs $4.99 a month in the US, with regional pricing elsewhere. It takes away banner ads, cuts the number of interstitial ads, doubles pinned memories to 30 and gives a daily allowance of the premium chat styles. The full c.ai+ plan costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year and removes ads and slow mode entirely, unlocks the premium styles without a daily cap and adds the advanced version of its Lorebook memory tool.
A lot of blogs quote a $2.99 price for the lite plan. Character.AI's own help page says $4.99 in the US, so go by that.
PolyBuzz has a ladder. In the US App Store, Poly Standard is $9.90 a month or $4.99 a week, Poly Premium is $19.90 a month and Poly Ultimate is $29.90 a month. Membership brings stronger-memory models, unlimited voice listening and no ads, with better chat models higher up. On top of that, coin packs run from $2.49 for 1,000 to $19.90 for 20,000. PolyBuzz's terms state that payments are non-refundable and memberships renew automatically.
The practical difference: on Character.AI you can pay a small amount and fix most of what annoys you. On PolyBuzz the entry plan costs twice as much, and the features people complain about most, memory and voice, are spread across tiers and a currency.
The age question: this is where they really split
This is the part that decides whether you can use the app at all.
Character.AI ended open-ended chat for users under 18. The change was announced on October 29, 2025 and completed around November 25, 2025, with a daily time limit that shrank to zero along the way. To enforce it, the platform runs age assurance in layers. An in-house model reads signals from your account and activity. If it flags you as possibly under 18, you can accept the teen experience or verify with a selfie through a vendor called Persona. Persona only asks for a government ID if the selfie check is inconclusive, and the company says Persona deletes ID images and biometrics within seven days. Paying for c.ai+ does not skip the check. Accounts confirmed as under 18 get a reading mode with no chat.
PolyBuzz is 18+ on paper. Its terms of use say minors are prohibited worldwide, and age is a date of birth you type in yourself. Only in the UK does it run mandatory checks through Ondato or Yoti. At the same time, its own FAQ still talks about a Teen Mode for younger users, so the two official documents don't fully agree. Parental-control sites that tested the web version reported no birthdate prompt at all, which we couldn't verify ourselves.
What that means for you: Character.AI is strict and verifies. PolyBuzz is 18+ by its rules and relies on what you tell it. If you've been bounced by Character.AI's verification, PolyBuzz will probably let you in. If you're a parent, that same fact is the reason to look closely at PolyBuzz.
Content rules: closer than people think
Both apps ban pornographic content in their written rules. Character.AI's community guidelines prohibit pornography and nudity, allow romance and violent storytelling within limits, and since December 2024 have run a separate model for teens.
PolyBuzz's terms ban content depicting sexual acts and its FAQ bans public display of NSFW content, with AI plus human moderation on recommended characters. Rule-breaking characters get flagged and made private. Its marketing, meanwhile, promises unrestricted chats, and users report that private conversations feel less filtered than the public catalog. PolyBuzz doesn't publish details on how private chats are moderated.
So the popular framing, strict Character.AI versus anything-goes PolyBuzz, is closer to a difference in enforcement and marketing than in written policy.
Memory: both admit it's the weak spot
Character.AI has built the most visible memory tooling of the two. There are pinned memories you choose yourself, auto memories added in March 2025, chat memories from May 2025, and Lorebooks for world details, with the advanced Lorebook reserved for c.ai+. Users still complain about "goldfish memory" in long chats, but at least you can see and edit what the bot is supposed to remember.
PolyBuzz is more candid about the limit. Its FAQ says the AI may forget earlier conversations over time. The fix it offers is money: paid tiers use models with stronger memory, and some memory features cost coins.
If long-running stories are your thing, Character.AI gives you more control for free, and more again for $4.99. On PolyBuzz, better memory is a paid tier.
Where the two overlap more than the comparisons admit
Both let you create characters, public or private. PolyBuzz can import character cards from Character.AI, TavernAI and Pygmalion, which makes moving a favorite bot over easier. Both have voices. Both generate images. Both are localized into roughly 28 languages, and characters on either will usually answer in whatever language you write in. Both run ads on the free tier.
If you were choosing on features, you could flip a coin.
So which one
Choose Character.AI if you're an adult who can pass verification, want the best memory tools, and would pay a small monthly fee to get rid of ads. Its lite plan is the cheapest way to fix the free-tier annoyances in either app.
Choose PolyBuzz if Character.AI's verification locked you out or you'd rather not scan your face, you care about importing existing character cards, and you mostly type rather than listen. Budget for coins if you like regenerating replies.
Be careful with PolyBuzz if you're choosing for a teenager. The rules say 18+, the age check is self-reported, and the FAQ still describes a teen mode. That combination isn't reassuring.

Where Friend2Chat sits in this
Friend2Chat is smaller than both. The characters are written by the team rather than uploaded by users, and organized into categories instead of an open card dump. It runs in the browser, with no voice.
A few things work differently. You can set up a character before the chat starts: pick a role such as friend or roleplay, and describe the scene in a few lines. In roleplay mode the character opens by asking what to call you, what tone and pace you want, and what you don't want in the story. Next to the chat there's a relationship level that grows as you and the character learn facts about each other, so you can see how much it knows.
You do need an account, and messages are limited unless you subscribe. If catalog size is what you want, both Character.AI and PolyBuzz beat it. If you want a character that asks before it starts improvising, the catalog is at Friend2Chat.
