Most lists of Chub AI alternatives are sorted by some vague idea of "best". That's not how people actually leave Chub. Somebody who's tired of pasting API keys wants something very different from somebody who wants a site with fewer rough edges, and a list that treats them the same will send half its readers to the wrong place.

Chub AI (the site at chub.ai, also known as Venus Chub or CharacterHub) is two things in one. It's a large library of community-made character cards, and it's a chat front end where you talk to those characters. Its own documentation calls the front end uncensored and lists features like chat trees, image generation and chat import and export.
The part that confuses newcomers is where the model comes from. Chub lets you plug in your own API keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, OpenRouter or NovelAI, or connect a model you run yourself through Kobold or Ooba. Or you can pay for Chub's own models. The docs list the Mars subscription at $20 a month with unlimited messaging. Reviewers also describe a cheaper Mercury tier at around $5 a month on the web, with smaller models and a shorter memory window.
Chub also has lorebooks: blocks of background text that get pulled into the prompt only when a keyword shows up in the chat. They're one of the reasons Chub cards are popular, and they matter when you move, which we'll get to.
Why people look for Chub AI alternatives
Reading through the reviews and forum threads, the reasons fall into a few groups.
Setup. Using your own key means you're managing an account with a model provider, watching a bill and troubleshooting errors that aren't Chub's fault. Some people enjoy that. Many just wanted to chat.
Cost you can't predict. With your own key you pay per message, so a long roleplay with a big model can cost more than you planned. With a subscription the cost is fixed, but the model you get depends on the tier.
Memory. Long chats run past the model's context window, and older details drop out. Lorebooks help, but you have to write them.
Content and trust. Chub is an adult platform. Reviewers describe an 18+ self-declaration and an NSFW toggle rather than strict checks. In October 2025 Australia's eSafety Commissioner sent Chub a legal notice under the Basic Online Safety Expectations, and by November 2025 Australian users reported the site was geoblocked there. The regulator published interim findings about Chub in March 2026. Some users leave because they'd rather be on a platform with clearer rules, whatever they plan to chat about.
Wanting something simpler. Some people never needed a card library of that size. They want a handful of good characters and a chat that starts in a minute.

1. SillyTavern: if you want more control, not less
If your problem with Chub is that it doesn't go far enough, SillyTavern is where most power users end up. It's a free, open-source interface (AGPL-3.0) that you install on your own computer. It needs Node.js 20 or newer, and there's an Android guide that runs it through Termux.
SillyTavern doesn't host any model. You connect it to an API like OpenAI, Claude or Mistral, or to a model running on your own machine. What you get in return is control over nearly every part of the prompt, with full support for character cards and lorebooks (which it calls World Info). The project has more than 33,000 stars on GitHub and hundreds of contributors, so answers to most setup questions already exist somewhere.
Best for: people leaving Chub because they want to own their setup. Skip it if: API keys were the reason you left. SillyTavern asks for more setup than Chub, not less.
2. RisuAI: the same idea with less friction
RisuAI sits between Chub and SillyTavern. It's also open source (GPL-3.0) and also works with your own keys for OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, OpenRouter and others. The difference is that it runs as a web app or a desktop app, so you can try it without installing a server.
It supports lorebooks, group chats with several characters, emotion images for characters and a plugin system. It also ships its own long-term memory options, which is worth a look if your Chub chats kept forgetting things.
Best for: people who like bringing their own key but want a cleaner interface and better memory tools. Skip it if: you don't want to pay a model provider directly.
3. WyvernChat: a hosted site that takes your cards
If you liked Chub's library feel but want a more polished hosted site, WyvernChat is the closest match. A March 2026 review describes a free tier with unlimited messages and a library of over 16,000 characters. Paid plans are listed at $10 a month (Feather Basic) and $25 a month (Feather Premium).
For people moving out of Chub, two things stand out. WyvernChat imports character cards as PNG or JSON files, and it has lorebooks with keyword triggers. It also lets you add your own API connections if you'd like to keep using a specific model. Like Chub, it allows adult content for users 18 and over behind a toggle.
Best for: people who want a hosted site that accepts their existing cards. Skip it if: you're leaving because of adult content on the platform.
4. JanitorAI: the biggest community next door
JanitorAI is the name that comes up most often when Chub users compare notes. It's built around user-made characters, and many people use it with their own API key or a proxy, just like Chub. Its terms, last updated in July 2026, say the platform is only for users who are at least 18, and they now describe a paid janitor+ subscription and router credits alongside the free way of using it.
JanitorAI's character pages are more social than Chub's, with more emphasis on browsing and following creators. Best for: people who want a huge community library and don't mind a similar setup to Chub. Skip it if: setup and stability are your reasons for leaving.
5. Character.AI: the filtered mainstream option
Character.AI is the opposite of Chub in most ways that matter. It hosts its own models, so there are no keys. It has apps for iOS and Android. It filters content, and it has closed open-ended chat for users under 18 since November 2025, running age checks to enforce that.
The free tier comes with ads and a slow mode at busy times. Paid plans start with a lite plan at $4.99 a month in the US, and the full c.ai+ plan is $9.99 a month. The library is huge and user-made, and its memory tools are among the better ones in the category.
What you give up coming from Chub is control. You can't choose the model, you can't import a Chub card as it is, and the filter will step in during some scenes. 6. Friend2Chat: a curated, safe-for-work option
Friend2Chat is small next to everything above, and it's built differently. Its characters are written by the team rather than uploaded by users, and they're sorted into categories like anime, fantasy, celebrities and historic figures. There's no card import, no lorebook editor and no choice of model. It runs on DeepSeek, in the browser only, with no app and no voice.
What it does is take away most of the setup Chub asks for. Before you chat, you pick a role for the character, such as friend or roleplay partner, and describe the scene in a few lines. In roleplay mode the character asks a few questions first: what to call you, what tone you want, what to keep out of the story. A relationship level next to the chat shows how much the character has learned about you.
You need an account. There's a free message allowance, then a subscription. The platform is safe for work, so it won't suit anyone who wants adult roleplay. If you'd like a smaller set of ready-made characters and a chat that starts without configuration, you can browse them at Friend2Chat.

Moving your characters out of Chub
If you've built or collected characters on Chub, you don't have to start over everywhere. Chub uses the Tavern card format, a PNG image with the character data inside, or a JSON file. SillyTavern, RisuAI and WyvernChat all read those. Before you leave, download the cards you care about and any lorebooks attached to them.
A few things don't travel well. Chat history usually stays behind, or comes out in a format the next app can't read. Lorebooks carry over to apps that support them, but trigger settings can behave differently, so test one before you rely on it. Hosted sites like Character.AI and Friend2Chat don't take cards at all, so there you're rebuilding from the character's description or picking from what the site offers.
