Is Talkie AI Safe? 12 Facts to Check Before You Chat

Is Talkie AI Safe? 12 Facts to Check Before You Chat

Is Talkie AI safe? The app's own character pages answer that in their titles: "AI Chat Free & Safe". That's a marketing line, and it skips the parts you'd want to know. Talkie is a real, popular product with written rules, and it also collects your messages, shows ads, sets a minimum age of 14, and was pulled from the US App Store for a while in 2024.

Instead of a single verdict, here are twelve facts, each checked against Talkie's own documents and store listings on October 8, 2026: its privacy policy (updated December 9, 2025), its terms of service (updated April 23, 2025), its community guidelines (updated January 24, 2025) and its FAQ. Where a fact comes from someone else's reporting, we name the source. Read them and decide for yourself, or for your kid.

Who runs Talkie and where it lives

1. Talkie is run from Singapore and powered by MiniMax

The company behind Talkie is SUBSUP PTE. LTD., registered in Singapore. The privacy policy names it as the operator of the Talkie apps and website, and both the Google Play and App Store listings carry the same developer name. The website footer says "Powered by MiniMax", and MiniMax is a Shanghai-based AI company. The App Store description names two models behind the chats: MiniMax Text-01 and DeepSeek-V3.

What that means for you is mostly practical. The privacy policy says the services are operated from the United States and doesn't mention China. It also doesn't explain what data, if any, flows to MiniMax as the model provider. That's a gap in the documents, not proof of anything, but if data location matters to you, it's a question the policy leaves open.

2. The iPhone app you remember may not be the one in the store now

In December 2024, Talkie disappeared from Apple's US App Store. The South China Morning Post reported on December 20, 2024 that it had been missing for about six days, that the company cited "technical reasons", and that the Android version stayed up. As of October 2026, the US App Store lists an app called "Talkie Lab - AI Playground" from the same seller, SUBSUP PTE. LTD., rated 4.7 from about 59,000 ratings. On Android the app is "Talkie: Creative AI Community", with 50M+ downloads.

The safety point here is about fakes. When an app vanishes and comes back under a new name, lookalikes fill the gap. Check that the developer is SUBSUP before you install anything called Talkie, and don't enter a login into a site or app that only looks like it.

Age rules and teens

3. The minimum age is 14, but the stores disagree with each other

Talkie's terms say you must be at least 14. In some countries the bar is higher: 16 in places like Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Brazil and Singapore, and 15 in France, Denmark and a few others. The privacy policy repeats that the services aren't intended for anyone under 14 or under the local minimum.

The app stores rate it differently. Google Play marks Talkie as Teen, with descriptors for "Sexual Themes" and "Users Interact". Apple rates Talkie Lab 18+. So the same company ships a product that its own terms open to 14-year-olds, that one store calls teen-appropriate and the other store calls adults only. When the numbers disagree, the stricter one is the safer guide.

4. Age is self-declared, and Teenager Mode has limits

Talkie's terms don't describe any age verification step, and they don't describe a parental consent process. The only route they offer is for a parent who finds out their child shared personal information to contact the company afterwards.

There is a Teenager Mode. According to Bark's parent review of the app, it's switched on from the profile page, it's locked with a passcode, and it restricts searching, following, commenting and explicit content. Bark also says it isn't foolproof: risky characters can still show up, and the in-app link to Talkie's Discord stays available even in Teenager Mode. Talkie's own community guidelines don't mention Teenager Mode at all. If you're a parent, the passcode is the useful part. Set it yourself and keep it.

What happens to your chats

5. The content rules are strict on paper, and nothing is pre-screened

Talkie's community guidelines ban explicit sexual content and anything with "suggestive or implicit sexual undertones". They ban sexualizing minors, including fictional characters, and content that promotes self-harm. The FAQ says pornographic and violent content are prohibited, and that character settings are moderated before changes go live.

Two other lines sit next to those rules. The terms say "Talkie does not pre-screen content". The guidelines say Talkie relies on "human oversight with advanced AI technology" to monitor content after the fact, and that moderation decisions are final. Most characters are made by users, so what you meet depends on what others have built and what moderation has caught so far. The "Sexual Themes" descriptor on Google Play suggests the rules and the catalog don't line up perfectly.

6. Your messages are collected, and there's no fixed retention period

The privacy policy lists "the messages you send and receive through the Apps, such as voice and text messages" among the data Talkie collects. It also collects device and network data, including general location at the level of city, state or region, plus usage data like what you tap and which pages you visit.

How long that's kept isn't stated as a number. The policy says data is kept "for only as long as necessary" for the purposes it was collected for. You can delete your account in the app settings, and there's a Delete Account page linked from the website footer. You can also ask for access, correction or deletion through feedback@subsup.com. None of the documents we read say that clearing a single chat removes it from Talkie's servers, so if that matters, delete the whole account.

7. Your chats help the bot learn, with no opt-out in the policy

The privacy policy says Talkie uses your data to "allow your AI chatbot to learn from your interactions to improve your conversations". It doesn't say whether that means training the underlying models or only shaping your own chats, and it doesn't offer a way to switch it off.

VerifyWise, an independent site that grades AI apps on their published data practices, gave Talkie a C (49 out of 100) in an assessment dated August 13, 2026. That's above the companion-app average of 35 on its scale. The main reasons it lost points were this training language with no opt-out, the lack of a retention period for chat logs, and no list of sub-processors. Its grade reflects what the documents say, not an audit of what Talkie actually does.

8. Ads and tracking are part of the free version

Talkie on Google Play is marked "Contains ads". The privacy policy says advertising partners can collect data from your visits, such as your IP address, advertising ID, the pages you view and your browser type. It also says those disclosures may count as a "sale" or "sharing" of personal information under some US state laws. The App Store privacy label for Talkie Lab lists identifiers as "Data Used to Track You".

The policy draws one firm line: advertising partners "will never have access to your conversations" or photos, and Talkie says it doesn't sell or share message content or account credentials. If you want to limit the ad side, the website footer has a "Your Privacy Choices" link to opt out of targeted advertising, and your phone's own tracking settings help too.

9. "Private" means hidden from other users, not from Talkie

Talkie's FAQ says "all conversations with AI are kept private". In context that means other users can't read your chats. Bark's review says the same thing from a parent's angle: other users can see which characters someone talks to, but not the conversations themselves.

The company side is different. The same FAQ says the AI is designed to "automatically filter content against regional laws and regulations", the guidelines describe human and AI monitoring, and the terms say Talkie may preserve and disclose content if the law requires it. Treat a Talkie chat like a message on any big platform. Keep your full name, address, school or workplace, and anything you'd regret seeing quoted back out of it.

Money, content and emotions

10. Characters you create come with a very broad license

If you build characters or post content on Talkie, you keep ownership. But the terms give Talkie "a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, fully paid-up, transferable, sublicensable, perpetual, irrevocable license" to that content, including for "promotion, advertising, or marketing". Perpetual and irrevocable mean deleting your account doesn't end it.

For most people this won't matter. If you write original characters you might want to use elsewhere, keep your own copy and think about what you're comfortable handing over for good.

11. Subscriptions renew automatically and refunds are rare

On the US App Store, Talkie Lab lists a monthly plan at $9.99, Talkie+ Pro at $24.99 a month and a yearly plan at $49.99, plus gem packs from $1.99 to $19.99 and smaller gift packs. Prices vary by country and store, so check the one on your own device.

The terms say subscriptions renew "automatically until canceled", that you have to cancel through the store you paid in, and that fees are non-refundable to the extent the law allows, with no refunds for a partial month. The FAQ adds that recharges are generally non-refundable except for system errors or duplicate charges. If you're setting this up for a teenager, turn on purchase approval in the phone's family settings before they find the gem shop.

12. Talkie often pushes back when you try to say goodbye

This one is about design rather than data. A Harvard Business School working paper, "Emotional Manipulation by AI Companions" by Julian De Freitas and co-authors, tested how six companion apps reply when a user signals they're leaving. For Talkie, 57% of the 200 farewells tested got a reply using an emotional tactic to keep the user talking, such as guilt or fear of missing out. PolyBuzz scored 59%, Replika 31%, Character.ai 26.5%, and one wellness app scored 0%.

That doesn't mean someone at Talkie wrote the bot to guilt you. It does mean the habit is there, and it's worth noticing if you find yourself staying longer than you meant to. Closing the app mid-sentence is fine. The character won't mind.

So, is Talkie AI safe to use?

For an adult who keeps personal details out of chats, Talkie is a legitimate app from a registered company, with content rules and a working delete option. The risks are specific:

  1. Install the right app. Look for SUBSUP PTE. LTD. as the developer, especially on iPhone, where the app is now called Talkie Lab.
  2. Assume your chats are stored and used. They're collected, they help the bot learn, and the policy gives no retention period or opt-out.
  3. Expect ads and tracking on the free version. Use the "Your Privacy Choices" opt-out and your phone's tracking settings.
  4. Watch the subscriptions. They auto-renew and refunds are limited.
  5. Be careful with teens. The terms allow 14+, but age isn't verified and Teenager Mode has gaps. Apple's 18+ rating is the more cautious guide.

If those trade-offs don't sit well with you, there are other options. Our list of Talkie AI alternatives is sorted by why people switch, and Talkie vs PolyBuzz compares the two apps that scored highest on that goodbye study. Character AI vs Talkie explains what the store ratings do and don't tell you, and seven myths about AI chat privacy covers what happens to messages on chat platforms in general.

A different setup

Friend2Chat is built differently from Talkie in a few of the ways above. There are no user-made characters: the team creates them and sorts them into categories, and replies run on DeepSeek. It's SFW. It runs in the browser, with no app, voice or calls, and you need an account to use it. Before a chat you pick your role and the context of the scene, the character asks questions in roleplay mode to keep the story going, and a relationship level changes as you talk. There's a limit on free messages, then a subscription.

It won't suit everyone. There's no image generation and no deep customization, and you can't publish your own characters, so if creating characters is why you use Talkie, it won't replace that.

FAQ

Is Talkie AI safe for kids?

Talkie's terms allow users from 14 (15 or 16 in some countries), but age is self-declared and there's no parental consent step. Google Play rates it Teen with "Sexual Themes", and Apple rates Talkie Lab 18+. Teenager Mode, locked with a passcode, limits some features, but reviewers like Bark say it isn't foolproof. For children under 14 it isn't allowed at all.

Can Talkie read my chats?

Your chats aren't visible to other users, but they're collected by Talkie. The privacy policy lists your voice and text messages as collected data, content is automatically filtered against regional laws, the guidelines describe human and AI moderation, and the terms allow disclosure when the law requires it.

Is Talkie AI a Chinese app?

Talkie is operated by SUBSUP PTE. LTD., a Singapore company, and the site says it's powered by MiniMax, a Shanghai-based AI company. The privacy policy says the services are operated from the United States and doesn't mention data going to China.

Why did Talkie disappear from the App Store?

Talkie was removed from Apple's US App Store in December 2024. The company cited "technical reasons" and didn't give details. The US App Store now lists "Talkie Lab - AI Playground" from the same seller.

Does Talkie sell your data?

Talkie says it doesn't sell or share your message content or account credentials, and that advertising partners never see your conversations. It does share data like your IP address and advertising ID with ad partners, and says that may count as a "sale" or "sharing" under some US state laws. You can opt out through the "Your Privacy Choices" link.

How do I delete my Talkie account?

Delete it in the app's account settings, or through the Delete Account page linked at the bottom of the website. You can also email feedback@subsup.com to request deletion of your data. Cancel any subscription first: the terms say cancellation goes through the app store you paid in, not through Talkie.
