Most Janitor AI vs SpicyChat comparisons end with a winner. That's the least useful part of them. The two sites are close enough on the basics that "which is better" usually comes down to one or two things you care about, and each platform is very good at some of those things and weak at others.

What the two sites have in common
Both are built around characters made by users rather than by the company. You browse a large public library, open a character and chat, or you write your own with a personality, a greeting and a scenario. Both let you set up a persona, a short description of who you are in the story, so characters address you consistently.
Both are adult platforms. JanitorAI's terms, last updated July 29, 2026, say the platform is intended only for users who are at least 18. SpicyChat's community guidelines say the same, and add that every chatbot must be portrayed as an adult. Both allow adult roleplay, and both ban a long list of content, including anything involving minors and bots based on real people.
That shared ground is why people compare them in the first place. Where they split is how they charge, how they handle memory and how much of the machinery they show you.
Price: best and worst
Janitor AI at its best. The free version is the main product, not a trial. Janitor's announcement of its paid plan in June 2026 said the free version "stays completely free," and the help center promises a free option will always exist. For someone who chats for hours without wanting a bill, that's hard to beat.
Janitor AI at its worst. The costs move elsewhere. The paid plan, janitor+, is $12.99 a month and mostly buys more memory, priority when the site is busy and some messages on stronger models. If you want a specific third-party model, you either bring your own API key (and pay that provider per message) or buy Router credits inside Janitor, which are billed per token. Neither cost is fixed, so a long roleplay on a big model can cost more than you expected.
SpicyChat at its best. Pricing is simple. You pick a tier and pay a flat fee, with no per-message bills and no keys. Since September 8, 2026 the monthly tiers are Get A Taste at $5.95, True Supporter at $19.95 and I'm All In at $29.95, with annual versions at $60, $199.95 and $299.95.
SpicyChat at its worst. That's a real price rise. The middle tier went up from $14.95 to $19.95, and the top one from $24.95 to $29.95. Subscribers who started before September 8 keep their old price, but only while they stay on the same plan. According to SpicyChat's own FAQ, any upgrade, downgrade or switch between monthly and annual moves you to the new pricing for good. And the free tier, while real, is narrow in the area that matters most for long chats, which brings us to memory.
Memory: best and worst
Memory in both cases mostly means the context window: how much of the conversation, plus the character's definition, the model can see when it writes a reply. When a chat runs past that limit, older details drop out and the character starts forgetting.
Janitor AI at its best. Free users get a noticeably larger window than SpicyChat's free tier. Reviewers put Janitor's free context at around 9,000 tokens, and janitor+ advertises five times more. For a long story on a free account, that difference shows up quickly.
Janitor AI at its worst. Past the bigger window, keeping a long story consistent is mostly manual work. A tight character definition, a clear persona and restating key facts when the character drifts do more than any setting. Nothing on the free tier searches old parts of the chat for you.
SpicyChat at its best. Paid tiers get real memory tools. Semantic Memory 2.0 turns the chat into short stored "memories" that the character searches when it replies, rather than relying only on the last stretch of messages. A Memory Manager lets you read, edit, pin or delete those memories yourself. The top tier raises the context window to up to 32,768 tokens on supported models.
SpicyChat at its worst. The free tier and the $5.95 tier both share a context window of up to 4,096 tokens, and replies on those tiers are capped at 180 tokens. That window also has to hold the character's definition and your settings, not just the conversation. With a detailed character, the chat history gets squeezed fast. True Supporter doubles the window to 8,192 tokens, which is still smaller than what Janitor gives free users.
If memory is your main complaint with your current site, this is the section that should decide it: free and forgetful-tolerant, Janitor; paid and willing to manage memories, SpicyChat.
Models and setup: best and worst
Janitor AI at its best. Choice. Janitor runs its own model for everyday roleplay, and on top of that you can connect a third-party model through your own API key or a proxy. Since July 2026, janitor+ subscribers can also use Router, which puts third-party models inside Janitor without any proxy setup, paid per token from a credit balance. Janitor's help page says Router is an addition and existing proxy setups keep working.
Janitor AI at its worst. That choice is also where most of the frustration comes from. Proxy guides, API errors, a provider changing its rules overnight: a big share of Janitor forum threads are about setup, not about characters. If a bot suddenly writes badly, it can be hard to tell whether the problem is the character, the model or your settings.
SpicyChat at its best. Nothing to set up. SpicyChat hosts all of its models, more than ten of them, and unlocks them by tier. Free users get several, starting with a default model the docs list at 26B parameters with a 32K window. Paid tiers add larger options, and the top tier includes big models such as DeepSeek V3 and Qwen variants. You pick from a menu and chat.
SpicyChat at its worst. You can't bring your own model or key. If the model you like sits in the top tier, the only way to use it is to pay $29.95 a month. And a model's own window doesn't override your tier's context limit, which confuses a lot of new subscribers.
Features: best and worst
Janitor AI at its best. The library and the community. Janitor is the name most people mention first in this space, and its character pages lean social, with creators to follow and a lot of browsing. The core chat is simple and doesn't bury you in menus.
Janitor AI at its worst. Next to SpicyChat, fewer extras are built into the site itself. Most of what power users do on Janitor they do through their model and prompt settings, which brings back the setup question from the previous section.
SpicyChat at its best. A lot is built into the site. The docs list group chats with several characters, lorebooks, a Director Mode for steering scenes, and personas (up to 10, 50 or 100 depending on tier). Higher tiers add images in the conversation and text-to-speech with custom voices. SpicyChat can also import character cards exported from Character.AI as PNG or JSON files.
SpicyChat at its worst. Many of those features are behind the paywall, and some only at the top. Text-to-speech and priority in the generation queue are in I'm All In; conversation images start at True Supporter. On the free tier, SpicyChat is a much plainer product than its feature list suggests.
Age checks and rules: best and worst
This is the area where comparisons written before 2026 are most out of date. Both platforms now run age verification in some countries, and the rules differ.
Janitor AI. Janitor requires verification for users in Australia and Brazil (from April 24, 2026) and the United Kingdom (from June 15, 2026). It uses a third-party provider, k-ID, with a choice of a video selfie processed on your device, an ID scan, or an existing verification from another service. Janitor says it only receives a yes or no on whether you're over 18. The best part is the privacy design. The worst part is that in those three countries you can't use the site at all without verifying.
SpicyChat. SpicyChat requires verification in France, the UK, Italy, Australia and 26 US states, based on your IP address. The main method is a video selfie, with an ID check as a fallback in some regions. Unverified users can still use the site, but adult content is hidden until they verify. The best part is that you aren't locked out entirely. The worst part is the wider map: far more users will hit a check on SpicyChat than on Janitor.
Neither platform is a place for anyone under 18, and neither pretends to be.
Apps: best and worst
SpicyChat has an official Android app, but it's downloaded as an APK from SpicyChat's site rather than from Google Play. There's no native iOS app anymore. Older App Store installs may still run but aren't updated, and the docs suggest adding the web version to your home screen instead. Google Play does carry PixelChat, SpicyChat's safe-for-work sister platform, and a subscription bought there applies to SpicyChat too.
Janitor AI is mainly used in the browser, and some of its newer features, including Router, are web-only for now. If you chat mostly on a phone, test both in your mobile browser before paying for either.
Who each one is best and worst for
Janitor AI is the best pick if you chat a lot, don't want a monthly bill, and are comfortable with a bit of setup when you want a better model. It's the worst pick if API keys and proxy guides are the reason you're looking at alternatives in the first place.
SpicyChat is the best pick if you want a single monthly price, memory tools you can edit, and extras like group chats and voice without configuring anything. It's the worst pick if you plan to stay on the free tier for long stories, or if you live somewhere its age check will apply and you'd rather not do a video selfie.
If you're still torn, run the same character on both for an evening. Open with an identical scene, go past fifty messages, and check which one still remembers what happened at the start. That test settles the memory question better than any spec sheet.
