Muah AI Alternatives: The Switching Hacks Most People Miss

Muah AI Alternatives: The Switching Hacks Most People Miss

People looking for Muah AI alternatives usually already know why they want out. Maybe the VIP bill crept up, maybe the replies started to feel flat, or maybe they read about the 2024 breach and got uneasy. What they rarely plan is the move itself. Most people open a new app, start from zero, and realize a week later that the character they spent months shaping is still sitting in an account they meant to close.

This guide is built the other way around. First the practical hacks for leaving Muah cleanly, then the alternatives worth landing on, each with one trick that saves you money or frustration there. We checked the official pages, help docs and app store listings of every service below in late September and early October 2026.

The short answer

If you want the closest match to what Muah does (text, voice, selfies and calls in one companion), look at Kindroid. If memory is the thing you're chasing, Nomi has the most visible memory tools. If you mostly used Muah for images, Candy AI works the same way but bills generated media in tokens. If you came for long text roleplay, SpicyChat and Janitor AI are cheaper places to write stories. If you want something calmer and story-first, Replika and Friend2Chat sit on that end.

Now the part most lists skip.

Hack 1: Export your chats before you cancel anything

Muah has a built-in export, and it's easy to miss. According to Muah's own guide, "Export Chat" saves a conversation as PNG or HTML "for reading", and you can also download `.muah` backup files. The guide is clear about the difference: a PNG screenshot or HTML export is "a reading copy, not a .muah restore file."

What that means for you: the `.muah` file only restores inside Muah. No other app will import it. The HTML export is the useful one for switching, because you can open it in a browser, scroll back through the story, and copy the parts that matter. Do this while your account is still active and paid, in case anything is locked behind your plan.

Hack 2: Copy the System Summary, not the whole chat

Nobody is going to paste six months of messages into a new companion, and no app would hold them anyway. Muah's guide explains that the AI "does not receive unlimited conversation history". Older messages get compressed by a beta feature called Automatic AI Memory Compaction, and you can edit the resulting System Summary to fix facts.

That summary is the most portable thing you own. It is already a condensed version of who your character is and what happened between you. Copy it into a plain text file along with the character's description and personality notes. In almost every alternative below, that block of text is what you'll paste into a backstory, a memory field or a scene setup. It does far more than any chat log.

Hack 3: Write down which features you actually used

Muah sells a lot at once. Its homepage lists text, voice, generated photos, video and live calls. Third-party reviewers put the VIP plan at around $19.99 a month, with higher tiers running up to about $99.99 (Plisio's review, updated October 5, 2026; Muah itself tells you to check prices in the app).

Before you compare alternatives, be honest about your last month. If 90% of your time was text, paying for a bundle with calls and video again makes little sense. If you used selfies every day, a text-only roleplay site will feel empty. This one list will cut the field of alternatives in half, and it's the main reason people switch twice.

Hack 4: Turn off renewal first, then delete

Muah's guide offers a "Delete Account" option and warns you to read the final confirmation for "the account being deleted and its scope." Deleting an account and stopping a subscription are often separate steps on companion apps, and billing can keep running on the payment side. Cancel the renewal where you paid (card processor, app store or the in-app VIP screen), confirm you got a cancellation notice, and only then delete.

If you're on a yearly plan, check the renewal date before you leave. There's no reason to throw away months you already paid for. Export now, keep using it until close to the end, and switch then.

Hack 5: Start the new account with a fresh email

In September 2024 Muah.AI was breached. Have I Been Pwned lists 1.9 million email addresses exposed together with users' AI prompts, and flags the breach as sensitive, so it isn't publicly searchable. Malwarebytes reported in October 2024 that many of those emails looked like personal accounts with real names, and later noted reports of extortion attempts. Australia's eSafety guide on Muah also mentions reports of hacking and data breaches.

The practical lesson applies to any companion app, not just this one: sign up with an email that isn't tied to your name, your job or your other accounts. If you used your main email on Muah, check it on Have I Been Pwned (sensitive breaches are shown only after you verify the address) and change any password you reused there. Our piece on AI chat privacy myths covers what companion apps typically keep.

Kindroid: the closest all-in-one match

Kindroid is the alternative that looks most like Muah on paper. Its subscription docs (updated October 6, 2026) list up to ten Kindroids and twenty group chats on the Standard plan, voice and video calling, daily selfies, and a million audio credits a month. Kindroid is 18+.

New accounts get a one-time preview: 50 messages with paid-level memory (15 in some regions), five selfies, and up to two Kindroids. There is also a three-day premium trial that needs a payment method and turns into a paid plan unless you cancel.

The Kindroid hack: buy on the web. Kindroid's own docs say prices vary by country and platform and that "buying on the web is usually cheaper than through the App Store or Google Play." If you start the trial, set a reminder for day two. Our Kindroid alternatives guide covers what people dislike about it once the trial ends.

What you give up: Kindroid takes setup. Backstory, memory and personality fields reward effort, which is good if you have that Muah System Summary ready and a chore if you don't.

Nomi: when memory is the reason you're leaving

If your complaint about Muah was the companion forgetting things, Nomi is worth a look. Its homepage describes short, medium and long-term memory, and its Mind Map feature shows what your Nomi remembers as a visual map you can review and edit. You can try it free without a card. Nomi is 18+, and on the App Store (checked October 3, 2026) the Standard plan was listed at $15.99 a month, $39.99 for three months and $99.99 a year, with a cheaper Launch tier at $9.99.

The Nomi hack: after you paste your saved summary into the first chats, open the Mind Map and check what actually got stored. Fix wrong facts right away. It's much easier than correcting a memory that has been repeated for two weeks.

What you give up: voice is a paid feature according to Nomi's own wiki, and image features are lighter than Muah's.

Candy AI: if images were the main draw

Candy AI is the most similar to Muah in what it advertises: chat, voice, pictures and video, plus a character builder. The difference is how it bills. Candy's terms say a subscription gives unlimited messages plus a monthly token allowance, usually 100, and tokens pay for extended features like image generation and voice notes. Free accounts get a maximum of five messages.

The Candy hack: count your Muah images from last month before you subscribe. Third-party pricing breakdowns from September 2026 put an image at about 4 tokens, so 100 tokens disappear fast if pictures are your habit. We went through the token math in our Candy AI alternatives article.

What you give up: predictability. With tokens, the monthly price on the pricing page is the minimum, not the total.

SpicyChat: cheaper long-form roleplay

If you spent most of your Muah time writing scenes rather than trading pictures, SpicyChat is built for that. It has a large community library of characters, group chats, a lorebook and a Director Mode. Plans start at $5.95 a month (Get A Taste), then $19.95 and $29.95, according to SpicyChat's September 2026 pricing update. It's 18+, and in several countries and 26 US states it now asks adult users to verify age with a video selfie or ID.

The SpicyChat hack: pick the plan by context size, not by price. SpicyChat's docs list about 4,000 tokens of context on Free and the cheapest tier, 8,000 on True Supporter and up to 32,000 on the top tier. Context is how much of the recent story the character can "see". If your Muah stories were long, the cheapest tier will feel forgetful.

What you give up: there's no iOS app, and images are a smaller part of the product than on Muah.

Janitor AI: the free option, with a short memory

Janitor AI is the default free landing spot for text roleplay. It runs on its own model at no cost, has a huge community character library, and also lets you plug in a proxy or other models. It's 18+, and a paid tier, janitor+, costs $12.99 a month for more context and the built-in Router to other models.

The Janitor hack: reviewers put the free model's memory at around 9,000 tokens. Keep your character's core facts in the character description rather than relying on chat history, because that description gets sent every time. Your saved Muah summary fits there well. Our comparison of Janitor AI and SpicyChat has the full trade-offs.

What you give up: voice, calls and generated selfies are not what Janitor is about. It's text first.

Replika: the calmer, one-companion option

Replika is the oldest name here and the most different from Muah. It's built around one long-term companion, with a Memory tab and a backstory field. Friend is the free relationship status, and the other statuses come with Pro. Replika's terms set the minimum age at 18 and say purchases are final, with exceptions for the EU and Brazil.

The Replika hack: Replika's help center suggests writing the backstory in the third person, using the companion's name ("Catrina loves hiking"). Rewrite your saved Muah summary that way instead of pasting it raw. It reads more naturally to the model.

What you give up: Replika is not a multi-character roleplay tool, and it's not uncensored.

Friend2Chat: story-first and SFW

Friend2Chat sits at the far end from Muah, and it's honest to say so. It runs in the browser, you need an account, and there's a limit on free messages before a subscription. Characters are made by the team and sorted into categories, so you can't upload your own character or photos. It's SFW and runs on DeepSeek.

Where it helps someone leaving Muah is the start of a chat. Before talking, you choose your role and the context of the scene, so the conversation opens with a setup instead of a blank greeting. In roleplay mode the character asks you questions to move the story along, and a relationship level changes as you talk.

The Friend2Chat hack: use the scene context to carry over the mood of a story you liked on Muah. Your old character won't come with you, but a two-line description of the setting and your role gets a new story going fast.

Who it won't suit: anyone who wants adult content, generated images, deep character customization, or their own uploaded characters.

How to rebuild your character anywhere

Whatever you choose, the same three-step move works:

  1. Paste the short version first. Open with your saved System Summary or a trimmed version of it, not the whole history. Most apps read a long first message worse than a compact one.
  2. Put permanent facts where they persist. Backstory, character description, memory notes or lorebook, depending on the app. Chat history fades; these fields don't.
  3. Expect a different voice. A new model will not sound like Muah's, even with the same facts. Give it a few days and correct it gently in the chat instead of rewriting the setup every hour.

FAQ

Is there a free alternative to Muah AI? Janitor AI runs on its own free model, though its memory is short. Nomi, SpicyChat and Replika all have free tiers with paid upgrades. Kindroid offers a one-time preview of 50 messages, and Candy AI gives free users five.

What is the closest app to Muah AI? Kindroid, because it combines chat, voice and video calls, and selfies in one companion. Candy AI is the closest if images and video were your main use.

Is Muah AI safe? Muah AI is for adults 18+. In September 2024 it suffered a breach that exposed 1.9 million email addresses together with chat prompts, according to Have I Been Pwned. Its privacy policy is dated May 2022 and doesn't state a retention period. Use a separate email and avoid sharing anything that identifies you, on Muah or any companion app.

Can I move my Muah AI chats to another app? Not directly. Muah's `.muah` backups only restore inside Muah. Export chats as HTML to read them, then copy your System Summary and character notes into the new app's backstory or memory fields.

Is Muah AI still working? Yes. As of early October 2026 the site is live and describes text, voice, photo, video and live call features for adults.
